I received this comment on the latest picture I posted and then a reblog from it:

“That’s one broken structure she drew there. But only for her left foot, that’s turned in a reeally weird angle there. Specially when the knee is turned front.

Besides it, it’s just a not much…

You wouldn’t take medical advice from someone who googles shit and thinks it looks wrong why would you take C&C from an amateur who may or may not even be aware of the relevance of stylistic choices/aesthetics of whatever they’re looking at? That’s almost devaluing our profession like we don’t need the input and guidance of someone who knows what they’re doing over a flock of sheep with little experience.

If someone thinks it’s offensive that someone is randomly critiquing their work without having asked for it first, then don’t do it. We don’t all post art to be scrutinized for improvements. Tumblr has a huge fucking problem with being self-entitled with criticism like all the artists, amateur to professional have to accept and take whether they want it or not. And honestly, the best of us who don’t want it just ignore whatever crap gets tossed our way or dropped into our inboxes.

There’s some weird assumption that artists need to constantly be grateful for whatever we get. Though, why? The idea of the forever humble artist is getting pretty old when the system itself is being bludgeoned by slews of people becoming critics thanks to the internet where exposure is super easy. The idea that we should not be offended at minute-C&C is kind of offensive in itself. If we’re not allowed to be offended at a minor observation someone made on something we spent time on, presented in an unhelpful manner, then fuck.

Frankly if artists don’t say ‘please C&C me’ or give any indication that it’s even okay to do it, just don’t do it. It’s not even the concept of being nice or mean or asspatty. It’s kind of just rude because most of these ‘C&C’ are brief, unhelpful messages without any further explanations or any prior knowledge to what level the artist in question is at.

We’re under the assumption that all C&C is helpful. It really isn’t and for some reason we still take it because we’re horrible people if we don’t. I don’t think most people understand how to make C&Cs helpful and it doesn’t consist of giving it spontaneously one day on one picture. It’s a process. You get the best critiques from someone who knows your work, knows your goals and sees the repetitive, fundamental mistakes you make and tells you to fix them. You cannot help someone be better by fixing ONE drawing just like how you can’t get better by drawing just one drawing perfectly. That’s why the ‘anyone can critique’ argument will always fail to me because experience matters. Anyone can see that something is wrong but will anyone know the right way to fix it, what to practice to fix it or what to really look at to achieve the artist’s stylistic goals? No not really. Anyone can toss in a ‘please study anatomy’ but that’s really vague and doesn’t pertain to every area of art that someone is aiming to get into, especially when art is such a wide ass spectrum of things.

Some artists do love and take random C&C and some don’t. It’s a preference. I think people need to stop calling out artists who don’t want C&C from some Joe Schmoe and then getting called a spoil sport for not taking it. Some people only take critiques from people they know and trust to give them a good one and work with them through their mistakes and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I’m not going to lie, the entire C&C process is much easier when it’s coming from someone you know, trust and respect. Whose opinion you will not turn down and who you know cares about your improvement. Most importantly, it’ll be coming from someone who you know isn’t trying to offend the fuck out of you with some mindless commentary even when they do offend you with some mindless commentary.

THIS.

I do agree that most often, unless the artist has specifically stated that they love critique or want critique on a specific piece it’s best to just let it be. I know for one, if I got some random ass critique from someone I didn’t know, I’d read it, take it into consideration and depending on how relevant/accurate it seemed I’d either take it or leave it. Not that big of a deal. However I do kind of get ??? when people say that “amateurs” can’t give critiques…I understand that they could suck at giving, or wording the critique, but that doesn’t mean that what they say isn’t relevant. Just because my cooking tastes like old ass doesn’t mean I can’t tell when the food I’m eating tastes like shit.

For May, who is one of the sweetest and most hilarious artists on tumblr ever ´U`*

also i was kind of spamming the hell out of her ask box with stupid questions yesterday so yea

This is her Madison and as you can see she’s kind of confused about whether it’s still winter or spring with the scarf and flowers and what not but what the hell
